Archive Navigational Notes
Compilations & Splits: Bands featured on multi-artist compilations (such as the Faith/Void split album and the Dischord 1981 LP, not various-artists albums like Let Them Eat Jellybeans) and albums that are collaborations between two co-credited solo artists or bands are indexed under their individual names, but will link back to the main release entry.
Numerical Artists/Albums: Artists with numbers in their monikers (e.g., 2NE1) are strictly alphabetized as if the numbers were spelled out. The same methodology goes for album titles (e.g. 3-Way Tie (For Last)) when being alphabetized under Artists with multiple entries in the list.)
Articles: Articles like "The" and "A" remain at the beginning of the name (i.e. The Beatles, The Cure) in most cases, not after a comma, but remain sorted as if the article was non-existent. If the band did not usually add an article as part of their name (i.e. Minutemen), it is not used.
The Label Column: How the slash (/) is spaced is usually key here. If there's no spaces between the slash, this usually indicates a parent label releasing the album with a co-branded imprint with the sublabel coming first as is tradition (i.e. Def Jam/Columbia). If there's spaces between the label names, this is an indication of UK and US labels both being identified, and there's no hard-fast rule as to what country comes first right now, although it might depend on the artist's country of origin; check the Notes column on each entry for more details.
Other Naming Conventions: If a solo artist (i.e. Prince) sometimes co-billed his backing band on albums, I still file them simply under their solo artist name and denote any co-billing in the hyperlinked footnotes. Similarly, if an artist frequently appended the name of his backing group (i.e. Sun Ra and his Arkestra) the alternate name for that release will be given in the footnotes as well. This designation isn't 100% perfect: I've already "broken" it for Neil Young with and without Crazy Horse.
And speaking of Prince: Any releases where he credited himself as his unpronoouncable symbol will still be listed as being by Prince.
The Fifth Column: Here, I'll be slipping in codes to help differentiate whatever distributor, co-label, or similar affiliated label/company was associated with the album. I'm just using "Partner" as the most general heading I could think of. Sub-identifications will include [D] (distributor), [L] (licensed from), [L2] (licensed to), [I] (imprint), [PL] (parent label), [S] (sublabel/subsidiary imprint), [R] (reissuing label), [P] (production company), [PD] (pressing and distribution deal), [CL] (cassette-only label or release), [C] (co-label), [US] (US label}, [UK] (UK label), [JP] Japanese label, [JA] Jamaican label, [SK] South Korean label, [CN] Canadian label, [DE] German label, [IT] Italian label, [FR] French label, [IS] Israeli label. A country code next to a US or UK-based label indicates that the album was first released in that specific country through the local division of that label (e.g. Akina Nakamori's Variation being released in Japan via the American label Reprise), What I won't mention are actual label conglomerates (i.e. Sony, Warner, UMG, Concord, BMG, etc.) or distributors of independent labels (i.e. Revolver, ADA, etc.). Every one of these designations is on an album by album basis due to how crazy things tended to get behind the scenes at the label headquarters (like how The Jesus And Mary Chain and their UK label Blanco y Negro were with Reprise in the US for their first album and then Warner Bros. (Reprise's parent label) for Darklands. Also, these designations will relate to the original release only, not any reissues unless otherwise noted.
Footnote notes: Footnotes may not be added right away due to either time constraints or temporary brain farts. But like everything else on this site, everything is perenially under construction, so keep that in mind!
