The Big Black Racer X Covers

The reason Racer X has two completely different covers boils down to a classic, pre-digital case of misplaced analog assets... and maybe a prick move on the part of someone at Homestead Records.
The Original Homestead Release (1984)
When the EP originally dropped on Homestead Records, it featured cover art designed by Nate Kaatrud—whom you probably know better as Nash Kato of Urge Overkill.
The Touch and Go Reissue (1992)
Years later, when Touch and Go Records prepared to reissue the EP in 1992, they ran into a major snag: the original artwork source materials had been completely lost. Because the label couldn't locate the physical assets needed to accurately reproduce Kato's original design — probably because some asshole at the spurned Homestead label decided they'd try to put one over on Steve Albini after he pulled Big Black's back catalog from them — they had absolutely no choice but to produce an entirely new, alternate cover for the reissue and all subsequent pressings.
It is the ultimate archivist's nightmare—if you lose the physical art board, you lose the cover entirely!
